How to use the fillable PDFs

The lineup cards and the PDF playing-time matrices are real PDF forms. Nothing to install and nothing to sign up for.

  1. 1.Download and open it in a PDF viewer

Any viewer with form support works: Adobe Acrobat Reader (free), Preview on a Mac, or the built-in viewer in Chrome, Edge or Firefox.

  2. 2.Click a box and type

Every blank on the sheet is a field. Long names shrink to fit their cell. Each lineup card carries two copies on one landscape letter sheet, a coach copy and an umpire/opponent copy, and both copies share the same fields, so you type each name once.

  3. 3.Print at 100% and cut along the dashed line

Letter paper, landscape, scale set to 100% (Actual size), not Fit to page. The lineup card splits into two 5.5 by 8.5 inch cards along the dashed line. You can also print the blank sheet and fill it in by hand.

  4. 4.Save a filled copy

File › Save in Acrobat Reader or Preview keeps what you typed. In a browser, use the viewer's download button and choose to keep your changes.

How the playing-time spreadsheet works

The Excel matrix does the counting. Its one rule: the Total Innings list is the roster, and the innings grid only offers names from that list.

  1. 1.Open the workbook

Built for Microsoft Excel; Google Sheets opens it too (File › Import). Type the team, opponent and date in the boxes at the top right of the Playing Time sheet.

  2. 2.Enter your roster in the Total Innings list first

Type one player per row in the Player column of the Total Innings box (up to 15 players). Those names become the dropdown choices in the innings grid, so fill this list before you touch the grid.

  3. 3.Fill each inning from the dropdowns

Each row of the grid is an inning and each column is a position. Click a cell, open its dropdown arrow and pick the player. Softball: the DP column is the batting-only DP, and the FLEX player goes in the column of the position they play.

  4. 4.Watch the totals count themselves

The Inn column next to each name counts how many innings that player appears in the grid. Innings by Position counts the innings filled at each spot and turns red when a position is short, so an empty spot stands out.

  5. 5.Extra innings, formulas and printing

The shaded rows under the last inning are for extra innings; retype the inning number if you need to. Pink cells hold the formulas, so if you type over one, undo (Ctrl+Z / Cmd+Z) or download a fresh copy. The sheet prints on one landscape page.
